The 8th version of the Caribbean 600 is due to get underway on Monday with an incredible mix of a record 70 yachts out for this 2-3 day race. The only real classic participating is the Alfred Mylne design The Blue Peter built in 1930. Captain/Owner Matt Barker will be keen for a solid few days racing from a teak on oak construction versus these carbon fibre thoroughbreds.
The other one to watch is the mighty schooner Adix. The three masted gaff schooner has similar lines to the famous schooner Atlantic that made the remarkable record across the Atlantic ocean in 1905 with a time that stood for well over half a century. With her recent refit (read about the full story here) that brought Adix into the 21st Century with new carbon spars and EC6 carbon rigging, extended masts, increased sail area and plenty of dyneema, she will be a modern classic (1984) to watch.
The last few days they have been out training and news from an inside report:
“Weather is looking to be 15 knts easterly for the majority of the race building for the last 24 hours to 20 knts . Going by what I have seen today from her performance (and taking into account we still have a bit of tuning and trimming work to do to get her fully up to speed) I think we are looking good. All going well the super yacht overall is in reach as is beating Adela’s time.”
More to come….
