Commissioned by Baron Edmond de Rothschild she won several regattas including the Fastnet race, where she made a record that was unbroken for 19 years.
A total refit was carried out in 1992 by Pendennis Shipyard, England. A second refit was carried out in 1999 for consolidation of Gitana IV’s structure plus a reconstruction of part of the planking and revision of the keel and keel bolts. In 2017 the hull was completely stripped and brought to wood and painted. In 2018 the teak and plywood over the deckhouse of the saloon and the guest cabin was renewed.
