‘Northern Lights’ design was developed by Ted Hood for his friend Bradley Noyes. Two yachts were built from the design by Franz Maas in Holland. The first completed in 1972 was ‘Northern Lights’ (originally named ‘Surprise’), ketch rigged, for David F. McCullough of NYYC. Bradley Noyes waited for the second build completed in 1973, rigged as a sloop, and named ‘Tioga’.
‘Northern Lights’ (as ‘Surprise’) after a delivery sail across the North Atlantic, participated in the 1972 Newport/Bermuda Race.
