Mayan

Built in Belize by Towie’s Dockyard under the direction of Paul Allen, the owner.
John G. Alden Design #356-B

Rebuilt in 2005

Rebuilt by Wayne Ettel of Los Angeles. Double planked: Inner planking Western Red Cedar, outer planking Sapele (a type of mahogany). Most frames replaced with double sawn Purple Heart. All fastenings are in bronze. Floor frames replaced with stainless steel. External iron ballast remains original, Interior lead ballast was reduced to account for large battery bank, generator, and larger main engine. Deck and Cockpit rebuilt in swept teak, bronze fastened. Deck house sides original Mahogany 3” thick.
Originally a transitional schooner with a jib, fore staysail, a gaff foresail, and marconi main. Sometime in the 1950s she was converted to a staysail schooner rig. We have just returned her to her original rig configuration and added an asymmetrical spinnaker, fisherman staysail, advance staysail and gollywobbler.
Originally there were no winches. She now has four bronze winches for all halyards, two Barient #35s for the advance staysail and the gollywobbler, two Barient #28s for the genoa, jib and spinnaker, and a bronze electrically powered mainsheet winch. All new sails in 2015.

Interior

Full width main saloon entered from the front of the cockpit. Fold up chart table to hide all the electronics when not in use. Large table that seats 8. Just forward, a galley to port and owner’s stateroom to starboard with queen sized double berth. Further forward is a full size shower with its own entrance and an enclosed head with its own entrance to port. Guest cabin with a double berth to starboard. Further forward is a single berth to port in the companion way with storage to starboard. In the forecastle there is an extremely large double berth which serves as a sleeping area for our grand children and sail storage.
