Axel Nygren designed Gandul for the KSSS(the Royal Swedish Yacht Club) and was built by August Plym at Stockholm’s Boat Building (SBB) at Liljeholmen.
From the start Gandul was gaff rigged but like most cruisers she converted to a Bermudan rig in the 30’s. However, the original wooden mast was used which was relatively short and with a relatively small sail area as a result.
The ownership history is well documented and Gandul was under Saltsjöbadens Sjöscoutkår’s ownership in the 50’s.
The yacht has recently undergone extensive hull refurbishment with seven years on land, much thanks to extensive non-profit work. Thousands of hours of work have been invested and has resulted in hundreds of thousands of kronor in materials and shipyards. Still 90 percent of the original survives thanks to Master Plym’s knowledge and choice of wood!
Now Gandul is sailing with a modern Aluminium rig using the hull’s speed full potential and she is now a serious competitor.
