Ewan Lebourdais is a maritime photographer. For years, he has treated us to technically and emotionally rich work within the realms of the French Navy and the merchant marine. Driven by his passion for the sea and ships, he regularly takes us on journeys through his unique printed works and thematic exhibitions.
Appointed Official Painter of the Navy in 2021, he now marks his photographs with a small anchor—a privilege reserved for only six photographers within this prestigious, centuries-old institution.
By chance, we stumbled upon this photograph of Mariquita south of Portland, seemingly floating in an ocher cloud that appears out of nowhere.
Best known for his works focused on maritime subjects and submarines, he has also explored the world of classic yachts. For nearly five years, he has accompanied Fife designs sailing again in the English Channel and the Atlantic.
Tuiga, Moonbeam IV, Penduick… Fairlie, Cowes, Falmouth, Brest, or Douarnenez… so many subjects we may one day see in a dedicated book.
In the meantime, his work is a visual delight for sea lovers, fine yachts, and photography! Stay tuned!
If you have some time, take a look at his website—but be warned, it ’s time-consuming. Plan for a moment out of time.
