In 2015 the island of Elba enticed a number of classics that had just completed the Panerai event in Antibes and were en route to Porto Santo Stefano. Organised by the inspirational round the world sailor Laura Zolo the island provides the perfect stop-over and it was their second event under the auspices of AIVE (The Italian classic Yachting Association). However this year AIVE has abandoned them and are set to carry out an offshore race from Portovenere to the island of Capraia.
This hasn’t stopped Laura who is focused on bringing us another opportunity for some fun-filled days presented in a wonderful low-key Italian style at Napoleon’s island of exile. The locals bring their wares down to the dockside, the families gaze at the wooden spars and all under the backdrop of the beautiful Portoferraio old town and fort.
After my e-mail of support Laura wrote positively that she was riding an “encouraging breeze among the hard beating to get together the 2016 Elba event. The ball is rolling!”
The Elba Classic Vele d’Epoca Portoferraio –will be on from 8-12 June with the following outline plan:
Wednesday 8 June and Thursday 9 June will both be days to welcome and register the incoming boats, in Portoferraio c/o Darsena Medicea. –Music and events on land, and on the 9th a Welcome cocktail
Friday 10 – 11.30 1° day of race – 20.00 aperitif-dinner and music
Saturday 11 – 11.30 2° day of race – 20.30 dinner and music
Sunday 12 – 11.30 2° day of race – 20.00 Cocktail and prize giving
Monday 13 Departure for Argentario
There is the possibility to extend the mooring until Tuesday 14th.
