Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement’s philosophy of expressing one’s perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting. (Wikipedia).
Largely unknown, and almost incomprehensible in today’s world, is that Monet was one of the first artists to produce entire works in the outdoors. Prior to that artists had tended to only sketch in the outdoors, before finishing works later, inside.
Possibly best known for his ‘Water Lily’ works – some 6 feet high and over 20 feet in length – his beautiful paintings are on display throughout the galleries of the world, and he is regarded as one of, if not ‘the’, Impressionist.
