One of the most beloved British Romantic painters, Turner was born in Covent Garden, London. He exhibited water-colours and oils at the Royal Academy in the late 1700’s and, while largley unappreciated in his time, was championed by the critic John Ruskin.
As mentioned on www.william-turner.org: “Financial independence allowed Turner to innovate freely; his mature work is characterised by a chromatic palette and broadly applied atmospheric washes of paint.”
Now held dear by art aficionados the world over, Turner bequeathed the majority of his works to the nation and, as such, many can be seen on display in the Tate, London.
