The yacht FIFI (R41) is an excellent example of a R – Rated Sloop built to the Universal Rule, 20 rater. FIFI was commissioned in 1924 by Henry Maxwell, an industrialist of Larchmont, New York, to race in the Long Island Sound Fleet. Mr. Maxwell chose the celebrated William Fife III of Fairlie, Scotland to design his yacht. FIFI was FIFE DESIGN NUMBER 735, Mr. Maxwell chose the renowned yard of Henry Nevins of City Island New York to build her.
Launched in April of 1925, FIFI distinguished herself in the R Boat Fleet of Long Island Sound. Her racing career was well-documented in the New York Times and by iconic marine photographers Morris Rosenfeld, Edwin Levick, and more recently, Alison Langley and Kathy Mansfield. FIFI eventually made her way to Gloucester, Mass. where I purchased her in 1994. I have had the privilege of owining FIFI for the past 24 years.
