Lord Jim

Design No. 476 of John Alden and built in the same year as the famous Alden schooner, Malabar X, she started off as gaff rigged originally named ‘Meridian’. ‘Lord Jim’ raced a great deal up and down the States eastern seaboard and lined up against the likes of the Herreshoff ketch, Ticonderoga.

She was restored in 1960.

Owned for a period by Jol and Judy Byerley. They went on to set up ‘Lord Jim’s Locker’, a bookshop in Antigua, where Jol regularly gave his morning weather forecasts over the VHF.

Sunk and fighting for survival

Sunk in March, 2007 off Brazil. Re-floated and then put into a local shipyard to undergo a refit where there have been years of problems in getting the schooner released.

July, 2016 – Photos of Lord Jim taken at Praia Grande, Angra dos Reis, Brazil.

October, 2017 – Photos of Lord Jim taken at Angra. Presumably same anchorage as above!
