Joyette

Joyette running downwind in 1922. @Alamy

Originally designed and rigged as a gaff ketch she was later converted to a schooner rig.

Restorations have taken place in 1966-68 at Camper & Nicholson, Gosport, England.

Again in 1987-88 at Valdettaro, La Spezia, Italy, and for a third time in 1992 at Amico.

“I remember this  yacht well during the late 1960s. It was originally bought by three male models: Cyril Hartman, El Narge (spelling probably wrong) and another who’s name escapes me. She was moored at Campers yard (I think in those days at Shoreham, but not sure if that’s right?) and I used to go down for the weekends with Cyril and his girl, Maureen and we’d work on her – scraping varnish!! There was a “skipper” living on board called Wilf. Joyette’s stern had been shortened by about eight feet and she wasn’t exactly pristine! The original wooden rear mast had been replaced by an aluminium one. Not really “good” in sailing condition at this time. I seem to remember the guys bought the yacht for £8000. I think she had been lying in the mud somewhere in the Thames estuary.  I last saw this yacht in 1969 at which time I moved abroad and lost contact with Cyril and we never met again.” –  Martin Bayliss.
