Archina

One of nine boats that took part in the first Sydney-Hobart race in 1945.

Research by Anita Newman

Claude Luscombe Newman commissioned Archina. She was usually moored at their waterfront property in Wynulla road, Point Piper, Sydney, Australia.
As I am only just researching the NEWMAN ancestory (- my memory is put to test – from Ians childhood memories of this beautiful yacht.)
Last week (11/2018) my daughter & grandchildren accompanied me to the Woolwich Wharf & we were able to view Archinas’ beautiful old wooden workmanship. My grandkids were literally ‘elated’ as they had only heard vague talk about ‘Archina.’

Here is a pic of my eldest grandson…* at the helm of History. *‘Jacob Luscombe Newman’.(photo to come)

“She was originally a yawl, but in I think about 1957 when I sailed her she was converted to a ketch rig. She was owned at the time by John Howie and crewed by Denis (Jock) Brydon, as skipper, David Jones and myself along with others for a crew of about 7 or 8. I went to Hobart in ‘58 and 59. She was a comfortable boat with a reasonable turn of speed. I am pleased to hear that she is still around.” Keith Day.
